In March of 2013, approximately 24 Cape Meares home owners took the initial Red Cross training required to become a Red Cross volunteer. We are re-booting that effort with two classes, to be held Saturday, November 15th. These classes will introduce and train you in the most common Red Cross disaster responses. We are extending this invitation to Tillamook County at large.

AM class is Shelter Fundamentals: This class teaches you how a Red Cross shelter is set up and operated. Our schoolhouse (CMCA Community Center) is the site for weather related and other events short of the large local earthquake and tsunami. You will be able to help in the shelter, or just know what to expect if you need the shelter.

Lunch: During lunch, you will have an opportunity to sign up as a volunteer, or complete your registration if need be. We will arrange for lunch, and may ask you to donate a small sum to defray food costs.

PM class is Disaster Action Team (DAT): The Disaster Action Team workshop teaches students how to respond as a member of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team. These teams are dispatched to local disasters like house fires and minor flooding. After taking this class students can become DAT Trainees and be dispatched to local disasters as part of a team with more experienced DAT members. Since DATs are the basis of most Red Cross disaster response, it’s good for folks to understand how they work, even if you don’t want to become a DAT member.

The class schedule is:

Shelter Fundamentals, 8AM-12PM
Lunch at 12PM
Disaster Action Team Workshop 1PM-4PM
