Current recommendations for post event sheltering are considered in three phases.
Per FEMA and the Emergency Volunteer Corps Nehalem Bay (EVCNB) , Camping at Home is the sheltering choice after a seismic event. The rationale is that aftershocks may occur up to one week after a major earthquake.
Any standing structure needs to be assessed for safety before being used for shelter. A team of not less than two people may assess a structure for safety before it is used.
1. Communal or individual tents will be the immediate shelter option for survivors.
2. After the recommended period of one week, any standing structure that has been determined to be safe for habitation to the best of our volunteer’s knowledge may be used for shelter.
3. Additional sheltering could be built using salvaged materials and volunteer ingenuity . Long term goals of sheltering will include rescue efforts for displaced or residential survivors with a plan to leave Cape Meares.
