Water Procurement Protocol

FACT: A male should consume 15.5 cups of water per day and a female should consume 11.5 cups depending on ambient temperature and activity level per Harvard Medical School Health publications. (2023).

Three levels of water consumption and distribution are considered below; immediate (3 days), short term (1 week), and long term (unknown).

Each family unit is strongly encouraged to store an immediate amount of potable water.

Each family unit is encouraged to devise a water collection system if they live above the inundation zone.

Each family unit is encouraged to have a water bucket and water filter for personal use for harvesting water within the immediate community.

Our emergency preparedness team has designed a water procurement and distribution plan for   our community considering the immediate, short term, and long-term need.

Immediate need:

  1. Our sheds have ??? amount of water stored per shed. The amount of water given to each person will be the supply divided by the number of people. This supply is for consumption.
  2. Water will be handed out using plastic bladders stored in the shed and\or stackable water containers.

Short term water use will look at water sources near and in our sheltered areas (see protocol for sheltering):

A team of two or more will be formed to find stored water sources to include:

       1. Hot water tanks using tools found in the sheds.

       2. Any water storage tanks that neighbors are willing to share.

       3. Streams and standing freshwater using buckets for transport and filters stored in the  shed.

Water use during the short-term period includes consumption, sanitation, healing medical care, and cooking. Residents will participate in water gathering and sharing to meet the needs of the individual and the community.

Long-term water use will broaden the scope of water procurement:

Any creative use of water containers and bladders will be used to store and maintain a water supply.

All community members will share water filtering devices found in the sheds.

A centrally located water distribution center may be established for communal use.

The team for water procurement needs to rotate volunteers to decrease fatigue.

Special consideration should be given to keeping potable and non-potable water containers separated.

A team of not less than 2 people might hike to the Oceanside Water District Water Tower to assess tank stability and possible source for long term water use.  (Possible long lines of coiled PVC pipe may be available for water portage)
