Sewing Dissent: Against Erasure

When the current administration took power, it quickly issued executive orders to reverse progress made on diversity, equity and inclusion and addressing climate change.  Federal agencies and organizations funded by federal dollars began to scrub their websites of certain “woke” words and phrases such as diversity, equality, racism and terms related to the climate crisis.
In March 2025 the New York Times published a list of more than 200 “suspect” words.  Using that list 40 women (including 3 from Tillamook County) created a quilt.  Each quilter stitched three of the words onto quilt blocks of their own design.
The blocks were assembled into a quilt.  The quilt will have its first public showing at the Bay City Art Center as part of the July Artist of the Month series featuring the Cape Meares Artist Collective.
The quilt includes blocks stitched by Beverly Stein, Kirsten Blair, and Jenny Francis.
Please come to see the quilt during the July 3, 5-7PM Opening Reception or on July 18, 1-4PM for a Second Showing.
